THAAT

Thaat is the parental scale from which a Raaga is derived. This concept was introduced by Pt. Bhatkhande, who clubbed all the Raagas under 10 main categories, called Thaat. Thus, a Thaat can have many Raagas belonging to it. The term Thaat refers to the basic patterns in which the seven notes of the Saptak are arranged.

Every Thaat has one Raaga that bears its name. Other Raaga-s are derived from the Thaat by dropping one or more Swara-s from the parental scale.
