“Sur Sangam”
December 18, 2008 at ‘Chinmaya Vibhoothi’, Kolwan
Chinmaya Swaranjali, Thane
presented an exhilarating evening
of music and dance on December 18,
2008 Chinmaya Vibhoothi Ashram, Kolwan.
The theme ‘Music of India’
was based on the music
and culture of different states across India.
Poojya Guruji graced the occasion along with
Swamini Vimalananda and other Acharyas.
The presentation was to all the Teachers of Chinmaya Vidyalayas
from all over India and this programme
was a part of ‘sur sangam’.
Conceptualized and led by Shri Sriram Dixit,
the guru of Thane Swaranjali,
the entire audience was taken to a journey across India,
to experience the diverse musical cultures
of the different states and its people.
The programme began with the invocation of Lord Ganesha.
The musical journey started from Assam
and continued along the east coast.
The songs varied from from folk,
semi classical to light music.
If 'Dhono dhanye pushpe bhora' in Bengali instilled
a sense of pride for our mother land,
then 'Brahmam okate' insisted that the 'Paramatma'
is one for every one.
The folklore was explored well
with the numbers in southern languages.
The ‘kavadi chindu’ that praises the beauty
of Lord Kartikeya was accompanied by a dance number too.
Moving to the west coast, songs in Malayalam, Kannada
and Konkani gave an insight of classical,
folk and western shades of Indian music.
The ‘Gondhala’ song in praise of Devi
and the ‘Garba’ of Gujarat brought out the
festive fervour in the minds of the audience.
Songs from the central,
western and northern parts of India
depicted the diverse culture of our country
and the dance numbers added beauty to it.
If the composition “MUJHE LAAGI LAGAN”
gave a typical classical touch to the programme,
then the number in ‘Bhojpuri’
brought out the happiness of villagers
singing the praise of nature and its elements.
The programme came to an end
with a hymn on Lord Krishna.
The commentary helped
in the smooth flow of
the story line that was based on
2 NRIs visiting India to explore our music.
The programme was well received
and appreciated by all the Acharyas
and the audience alike.
It was indeed a joyous occasion
for the performers and the audience.
