“Parikrama – A Musical Journey through Spiritual India”
28 November 2004 at Fine Arts Auditorium, Mumbai
November 28,
2004 was a memorable day for the people
who attended ‘Parikrama’ - at the Fine
Arts Auditorium in Chembur. ‘Parikrama:
a musical journey through spiritual
India’ – was an audio visual treat
presented by the Chinmaya Swaranjali –
the musical wing of the Chinmaya Mission
set up with the blessings of Guruji –
Swami Tejomayanada.
The programme depicted various saints of
India and the sangeet parampara
associated with them through a
combination of music, dance and slide
shows. The journey started with an
invocation, which described music as
divinity itself.
Then after invoking
Lord Ganesha, the audience was treated
to compositions of various saints like
Adi Shankaracharya, Narsi Mehta,
Arunagirinathar, Mirabai, Tukaram,
Purandaradasa and many more. There were
dances, which accompanied many of the
songs – a colourful garba, a devotional
dindi, a rythymic Shiva-Parvathi dance,
a Krishna dance and a very sweet dance
by children on Vande Mataram. Two able
comperes – Sur and Taal took us through
the entire journey.
There was a ceremony half way through
the programme in which Guruji commended
the Swaranjali team for organising such
a grand show. Smt. Pramodini Rao,
Director of the programme, thanked all the
participants (making a special mention
of Shri Himanshu Nanda, whose tireless
efforts made this programme a reality) and
described this programme as the first big
show put up by one of the youngest
babies of the Chinmaya Mission –
Chinmaya Swaranjali.
This programme was
inspired by the earlier programmes put up
by the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra as Chyk Soul
Song Nites. Then Guruji felicitated Smt.
Susheela Acharya who has been offering
training in music to Chinmaya Mission
members over the last four decades and
who has been the driving force behind
all the Soul Song Nites conducted by Chinmaya Mission in the past. She was
also a very valuable advisor to this
programme.
Parikrama concluded with a moving homage
to our own Pujya Gurudev who was and
continues to be the source of
inspiration for all our programmes. It was
Gurudev who conceptualized the Soul Song
Nites as a programme, which would turn all
our senses towards the Lord.
As the audience left the hall, it was
evident that in this one evening Chinmaya Swaranjali had fulfilled one of
its objectives completely and
unambiguously – to instill devotion in
the hearts of people through the medium
of music. When Guruji was asked to
describe the programme in the one word, he
said it was “soul stirring”.
